Conditions
A diagnosis can feel like it has only ever happened to you. It has not. Here is what each condition is, in plain English, and the people who have talked about living with it.
Urinary system
The kidneys and bladder, which filter the blood and remove waste.
Kidney transplant
A kidney transplant is an operation to place a working kidney from a donor into someone whose own kidneys have failed, as an alternative to dialysis. Kidneys are the organ most often transplanted in the UK. They come either from someone who has died or from a living donor, who is often a relative or a friend. Transplants are carried out at 24 transplant centres around the UK, and donated kidneys are offered to matched recipients on the waiting list. Afterwards a person takes medicines for the rest of their life to stop the body rejecting the new kidney, and is supported to get back to normal activity, to look after their physical and emotional health, and to recognise the warning signs of problems. NHS Blood and Transplant recorded 2,868 adult kidney transplants in the UK in 2021/22. Source: NHS Blood and Transplant, 'Kidney transplantation'.
